Imagine if your car knew what the current speed limit was, and would not let you travel over this speed limit. The Speedshield Intelligent Traffic Management System can do this and much more.
Each vehicle fitted with the Speedshield Traffic Management System has an onboard roads speed limit database. The system checks the current location of the vehicle and queries the database to find the correct speed limit for the area. Once the speed limit is known, it is clearly displayed to the driver via the in vehicle unit and the maximum speed of the vehicle is actively limited.
The system also communicates with external devices, such as roadside transceivers and road works bollards. These devices assist in updating the onboard roads database, limiting the speed of the vehicle in selected areas or warning the driver in advance of potential hazards, such as level crossings or emergency vehicles.
Detailed data is logged and can be downloaded and viewed directly on a PDA using Bluetooth wireless technology. Data includes impact reports, number of times the speed limit was exceeded, average speed and much more. |
Speedshield’s Intelligent Speed Adaptation (ISA) is the most advanced
motor vehicle safety system in the world. The difference
between Speedshield ISA and other systems is that it is an active
speed limiting system, instead of a passive system. Passive systems
simply warn the driver that they are speeding. An active system
controls the speed of the vehicle, limiting how fast it can travel.
ISA electronically restricts the speed of the vehicle to match the
current speed limit in the surrounding area. As the vehicle’s speed
reaches the current speed limit, the acceleration is reduced. The
vehicle’s position is calculated using GPS technology, and real time
speed limit information is confirmed to give the current speed limit.
Each time the vehicle enters a known speed limit zone, the ISA
module will check the on board database for any known updates,
such as variable speed limit zones like schools or road works.
SSV3 ISA uses Dead Reckoning as a redundant system to track the
vehicle when GPS is unable to, such as when it is travelling indoors
or through a tunnel.
Kick Down System Override Feature
A software configurable override function is available allowing
the driver to obtain more throttles for overtaking if the pedal is
pushed to the floor.
Smooth Speed Limit Transitions
When a vehicle travels from one speed limit to another, the transition
from a high speed limit to a low speed limit, or vice versa,
is executed smoothly. |

ROADS COMMUNICATIONS
All vehicles fitted with the Speedshield Traffic Management
System have an onboard roads database that tells
the vehicle the current speed limit for the surrounding
area and the vehicle is speed limited accordingly. Any updates
to this database are sent over the wireless GSM network,
and transmitted to vehicles using roadside transceivers,
so that vehicles will always have a listing of the
correct speed limits.
An alternative to roadside transceiver updates is vehicle
to vehicle updates. If an updated vehicle passes by a vehicle
with older data, the latest roads database can be
transferred between the two vehicles.

IN VEHICLE UNITS |
|
Dedicated ISA Display
Displays the current speed limit for the surrounding area, and automatically updates when moving between different
zones. The unit also warns the driver if they exceed the current speed limit and actively limits the speed of the
vehicle to prevent speeding. |
|
PDA Running Speedshield ISA Software
Bluetooth wireless communication makes it simple to view the current speed limit and the current speed of the vehicle.
The Speedshield PDA software also has the ability to enable/disable speed limiting and warning systems. All data
that is logged can be downloaded directly to the PDA for quick viewing. |
Over speed Warning
The current speed of the vehicle is clearly displayed. If the vehicle
exceeds the current speed limit for the area in which the vehicle
is operating, an over speed alert is sounded. This includes an alert
via the Speedshield LED display and an aural alert via an on board
buzzer. |
Vehicle to Vehicle Database Updates
Once the on board vehicle database for a vehicle has been updated
via a roadside transceiver, the vehicle can transmit this
updated data to other nearby vehicles using wireless Bluetooth
technology. |
